Primitive reflexes

Primitive reflexes are automatic movements all babies are born with, controlled by the central nervous system. They help babies feed, move, and interact with the world. As the higher-thinking areas of brain develop, these reflexes should gradually fade, or integrate, allowing higher brain areas to take control of movement and coordination.

Sometimes, reflexes don’t fully integrate. This can show up as challenges in motor skills, coordination, or behaviour as a child grows. Common examples can be difficulty sitting still, challenges with coordination (e.g. riding a bike), being easily startled, or struggling with tasks that require fine motor control (e.g. writing).

At Your Body Works, we check for retained reflexes as part of a child’s assessment. Through gentle chiropractic care and targeted exercises, we can assist with integration of primitive reflexes; supporting optimal development, learning, and physical coordination for both children and adults.
