Chiropractic care for mums

Supporting the physical and emotional load of motherhood

With Mother’s Day coming up, it feels like the perfect time to shine a light on just how much mums really carry.

Because being a mum is a lot.

As mums, we often carry so much of the load for our families both physically and mentally. From literally carrying babies through pregnancy, to always having a toddler on one hip, a nappy bag over one shoulder, lifting prams in and out of the car, packing lunches, remembering clothing sizes, managing routines, activities, meals, and appointments… the list can feel never-ending.

And yet, most mums make it look easy.

A little bit like ducks—calm and collected on the surface, while underneath everything is moving a million miles an hour.

As chiropractors at Your Body Works, we see this every day… and for some of us, we live it too.

As a mum myself, I honestly don’t think I’d get through some weeks without popping in for a regular adjustment. For me, it’s one of the things that helps keep my body moving, my posture in check, and gives me a chance to slow down and reset.

I’ve also learned that looking after myself isn’t just about me. When mum feels better, moves better, and has more capacity, it often flows on to the health and happiness of the whole family.

The physical load of motherhood

Motherhood asks a lot of your body and not just in the newborn stage.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy creates huge changes in the body. As your baby grows, your centre of gravity shifts, your posture changes, and hormones can make your joints feel more mobile than usual.

For some mums, that might look like:

  • Lower back or pelvic discomfort

  • Tight hips or glutes

  • Mid-back tension

  • Rib discomfort or feeling short of breath

  • Difficulty getting comfortable at night

Chiropractic care may help support movement, comfort, and mobility throughout pregnancy—helping your body adapt to all those changes a little more comfortably.

Babies, toddlers, and the everyday carry

Then once baby arrives… the lifting doesn’t stop.

Feeding, rocking, settling, carrying capsules, lifting prams, leaning over cots, chasing toddlers, carrying groceries and children at the same time, it’s repetitive, often uneven, and doesn’t leave much time for recovery.

We often see mums experiencing:

  • Neck and shoulder tension

  • Headaches

  • Lower back tightness

  • Wrist or upper back discomfort

  • Feeling stiff or “stuck” when turning or bending

Even feeding can play a role. Whether breastfeeding, bottle feeding, or contact naps, spending hours in a hunched or forward posture can leave mums feeling tight, sore, and exhausted.

Many mums assume this is “just part of motherhood”… but feeling uncomfortable doesn’t have to be your normal.

The emotional load matters too

Motherhood doesn’t just challenge your muscles and joints, it challenges your nervous system too.

Broken sleep. Constant stimulation. Always being needed. Trying to be present for your kids while also thinking about dinner, laundry, school bags, appointments, work, and everything else happening behind the scenes.

It’s no wonder so many mums describe feeling:

  • Wired, but exhausted

  • Tense, even when they finally sit down

  • Like they can’t fully switch off

  • Easily overstimulated or emotionally tapped out

At Your Body Works, we talk a lot about the nervous system because it influences how we handle stress, how well we recover, how we sleep, and even how our body holds tension.

Many mums tell us they feel calmer, lighter, or more regulated after care—like their body has finally had a chance to exhale.

Sometimes chiropractic isn’t just about back pain.

Sometimes it’s about creating a moment where mum gets looked after too.

This Mother’s Day…

This Mother’s Day, while the flowers, cards, and breakfast in bed are always lovely… maybe looking after mum’s health deserves a little attention too.

Because when mum feels supported—physically, mentally, and emotionally—it often has a ripple effect on the whole family.

If motherhood has been feeling physically or emotionally heavy, our team at Your Body Works is here to help.
