Pregnancy and Chiropractic Care: Supporting Your Body Through Change
Pregnancy is a time of incredible change.
Some of those changes are obvious, like your growing belly. Others are a little less obvious, like the way your posture shifts, your joints move, your pelvis adapts, your breathing changes, and your body finds new ways to support both you and your baby.
For some women, these changes feel relatively smooth. For others, they can come with aches, tension, pressure, fatigue or the feeling that their body just isn’t moving the way it usually does.
While some discomforts are common during pregnancy, that doesn’t mean you simply have to put up with them. Pregnancy places new demands on your body, but pain is not something that needs to be dismissed as “just part of being pregnant.”
Chiropractic care during pregnancy is about supporting your body as it adapts, helping you move more comfortably, and giving your spine, pelvis and nervous system the best opportunity to function well during this season.
Physical changes during pregnancy
Your body changes gradually throughout pregnancy, but there are some key shifts that often influence how you feel, move and carry yourself.
Your centre of gravity shifts
As your belly grows, your centre of gravity naturally moves forward.
This can change the way you stand, walk and move. You may notice more arching through your lower back, increased pressure through your pelvis, changes in your stride, or tension through your hips, glutes, ribs or upper back.
This shift is a normal part of pregnancy, but your body still has to adapt to it. If certain areas were already a little stiff, overloaded or not moving well before pregnancy, the extra load can make those patterns more noticeable.
This is one of the reasons some women begin to feel lower back pain, pelvic discomfort, hip tension or a sense of heaviness as pregnancy progresses.
Pregnancy hormones can make your joints more mobile
During pregnancy, your body produces hormones that help your ligaments and joints become more mobile in preparation for birth.
This is a clever and necessary change, but more mobility does not always mean more stability.
For some women, this can create a feeling of looseness, instability or discomfort, particularly through the pelvis, lower back, hips or pubic bone. You may notice pain when rolling in bed, getting out of the car, walking, climbing stairs or standing on one leg to get dressed.
This does not mean your body is failing. It often means your body is asking for more support.
Supporting the pelvis, spine, muscles and nervous system through this time can help your body manage these changes more comfortably.
Your pelvis is adapting
Your pelvis plays a big role during pregnancy and birth.
As your baby grows, your pelvis needs to manage more load, more movement and more demand. The joints, muscles and ligaments around the pelvis all work together to support your posture, walking, balance and daily movement.
When the pelvis is moving well, your body often feels more balanced and comfortable. When there is tension, restriction or uneven load through the pelvis, you may feel discomfort through the lower back, sacroiliac joints, hips, pubic bone or glutes.
This is where many women find chiropractic care helpful during pregnancy. Gentle pregnancy chiropractic techniques aim to support pelvic movement, reduce unnecessary tension and help the pelvis move as well as possible.
A well-functioning pelvis may also help create a more comfortable and balanced environment for both you and your baby. By supporting pelvic movement, reducing unnecessary tension and helping your body adapt to the demands of pregnancy, chiropractic care may be a valuable part of preparing your body for birth.
Your ribs and breathing change
Your baby can take your breath away before they’re even born.
As your uterus grows, your diaphragm has less space to move, and your rib cage may expand to help your body adapt. This can make breathing feel different, especially later in pregnancy.
Some women notice rib discomfort, upper back tension, tightness through the chest, or the feeling that they can’t take a full deep breath.
While some changes in breathing are expected during pregnancy, rib and upper back tension can add to that restricted feeling. Chiropractic care may help support movement through the ribs, thoracic spine and surrounding muscles, which may help you feel more comfortable through your upper body.
If breathlessness feels sudden, severe, unusual or concerning, it is always important to speak with your GP, midwife or obstetric care provider.
Your upper back and neck may feel the load too
Pregnancy discomfort is not only about the lower back and pelvis.
As your body changes, your upper back and neck may also begin to feel more strain. Breast growth, postural changes, sleep disruption, fatigue and changes in how you carry yourself can all contribute.
Some women notice more headaches, neck tension, shoulder tightness or upper back aching during pregnancy.
These areas are often working harder than usual, especially as your body shifts forward and your muscles try to keep you upright and balanced.
Your sleep position changes
As pregnancy progresses, sleep can become a whole event.
You may find yourself using extra pillows, sleeping on your side, waking more often, or struggling to get comfortable. These changes can affect your hips, pelvis, lower back, ribs, shoulders and neck.
Sometimes the way your body feels in the morning is less about “sleeping badly” and more about your body needing support to adapt to new positions and pressures.
Small changes, such as pillow placement, gentle movement, or support through the spine and pelvis, can sometimes make a big difference.
Your nervous system is carrying a lot
Pregnancy is not only physical.
Your nervous system is also adapting to hormonal changes, body changes, sleep changes, emotional shifts, appointments, decision-making, work, family life and preparing for birth.
For some women, this can feel exciting and empowering. For others, it can feel overwhelming, especially if they are uncomfortable or not sleeping well.
Chiropractic care is not just about “cracking backs.” It is about supporting the way your body moves, adapts and responds to stress. For many pregnant women, care can be a chance to slow down, reconnect with their body, and feel more supported through the changes happening week by week.
A rough timeline of pregnancy changes
Every pregnancy is different, and not every woman will experience the same changes at the same time. But as a general guide:
First trimester
In early pregnancy, hormonal changes are already beginning, even before your belly has grown very much.
You may feel tired, nauseous, sensitive, bloated or more aware of your body. Some women also notice early pelvic or lower back discomfort, especially if they had pre-existing tension or movement patterns before pregnancy.
At this stage, care is often focused on comfort, gentle support and helping your body adapt to the early hormonal changes.
Second trimester
For many women, the second trimester is when postural changes become more noticeable.
Your belly begins to grow, your centre of gravity starts to shift, and your pelvis, lower back and hips may begin working harder. This is often when women first notice changes in walking, sleeping, standing, or how their body feels at the end of the day.
Chiropractic care during this stage may focus on supporting the pelvis, lower back, hips, ribs and posture as your body continues to change.
Third trimester
In the third trimester, your body is preparing more actively for birth.
Your baby is bigger, your pelvis is under more demand, your ribs and diaphragm may feel more restricted, and sleep can become more challenging. You may feel more pressure through the pelvis, more tension through the lower back, or more fatigue in general.
This is often when women seek chiropractic care to feel more comfortable, supported and prepared as birth approaches.
Care in this stage is gentle and adapted to your body, your comfort and your stage of pregnancy.
How chiropractic care may support you during pregnancy
Pregnancy chiropractic care is tailored to the individual.
At Your Body Works, care may include gentle adjustments, low-force techniques, soft tissue work, pelvic support, rib and spinal care, movement advice, positioning support and referrals where needed.
The goal is not to force your body into a perfect position. The goal is to help your body move well, reduce unnecessary tension and support the natural changes happening during pregnancy.
Pain may be common, but that does not make it normal
One of the things we often hear from pregnant women is:
“It’s probably just because I’m pregnant.”
And sometimes, pregnancy is part of the picture. Your body is carrying more load, your posture is changing, your hormones are shifting and your pelvis is adapting.
But pregnancy does not always create pain out of nowhere. Often, it highlights or exacerbates areas that were already under strain — old injuries, postural habits, stiffness, muscle tension, previous pelvic issues or movement patterns that your body was managing before pregnancy.
As your body changes, those areas may have less capacity to compensate.
That is why we don’t love the idea that women should simply accept significant pain as a normal part of pregnancy.
Common does not mean you have to put up with it.
If you are struggling with lower back pain, pelvic pain, rib tension, hip discomfort, headaches or difficulty moving comfortably, it is worth asking for support.
When should you see a chiropractor during pregnancy?
You may consider chiropractic care during pregnancy if you are experiencing:
lower back discomfort
pelvic or sacroiliac joint pain
hip or glute tension
pubic bone discomfort
rib or upper back tension
neck pain or headaches
changes in posture or walking
discomfort rolling in bed or getting in and out of the car
a desire to support your body as it prepares for birth
You do not need to wait until you are in significant pain to seek care. Chiropractic care can be helpful as a proactive way to support your body through the different stages of pregnancy.
That said, if you experience severe pain, bleeding, sudden swelling, dizziness, chest pain, unusual breathlessness, reduced fetal movement or anything that feels concerning, it is important to contact your GP, midwife, obstetrician or hospital care team.
Every pregnancy is different
Some women feel strong and comfortable for most of pregnancy. Others feel like their body changes almost overnight.
Neither experience is wrong.
Pregnancy asks a lot of your body, and every woman will adapt differently depending on her history, lifestyle, previous injuries, stress, sleep, strength, support and the way her body moves.
Chiropractic care during pregnancy is about meeting your body where it is and supporting it through change.
Whether you are newly pregnant, halfway through, or preparing for birth, we are here to help you feel more comfortable, more supported and more connected to your body during this season.
